Bringing the World Cup to music lessons!

With football fever (or soccer depending on where you live!) in full flow some of my students have been requesting to play themed theory games. One of the most popular is ‘Ball in a Bin’.

In this trick shot style game, students have to kick the ball into the bins to score points and take first place on the in-built worldwide leaderboard. There have been some very determined students looking to claim the top spot – and one of my football obsessed adults has even been having a go!

The questions are all on note values (at grade one level) and include 1/4, 1/2, 1, 2, 3 and 4 beat notes. Students add up the notes and choose a single note to replace them – so a bit of musical maths!

Ball in a Bin is part of a collection of digital games called ‘Theory One’. Theory topics are at grade one level and include time values, time signatures, tonic triads, tones and semitones, key signatures (C, G, D and F major), degrees of the scales (numbers), forming major scales, intervals up to an octave (numbers only), and terms and signs.

Games include ‘Catch the Sushi’, ‘Big Boss Alien’ and ‘Rhino Rally’. The ‘Studio’ version for teachers contains games not found in the ‘student’ version with a fun ‘Escape The House’ game where only music theory knowledge will lead the way out!

Find out more about how to access Theory One here and let me know if you have any questions.
